In the introduction by Jane Rees she notes that other town directories of this time gave only a general picture of trade and communications with the outside world, whereas this directory includes the marks of various manufacturers such as cutlers, scissors and file smiths, edge tool and sickle manufactures as registered by the Cutlers Company, which often were the only means of identifying makers.
