Reprint of the 1868 edition. Written in the thirty-year period between Charles Holtzapffel's Vol III and John Jacob Holtzapffel's Vol IV. In addition to regular instruction in plain turning this has 133 pp. on ornamental turning (Part IV) and is still considered a valuable reference book for which Northcott was given the freedom of the Turners Company. The author was the first person to advocate the use of diamond-tipped tools for ornamental turning and deals in detail with the use of the geometric, or Ibbetson, chuck, laying down 39 rules for its use. Northcott was a contributor to "English Mechanic"
