Charles F. Hummel, WITH HAMMER IN HAND.
Ref: 0205
Published by the University of Virginia Press.
1968 edition reprinted 1976. This is essentially a description of the Dominy Workshop, its tools and objects that were made there, and which are now housed in total at the Wintherthur Museum in Delaware. It is rare to find details and contents of one workshop and the artisans, preserved as these have been. The Dominy family worked during the 18th and 19th Centuries producing furniture and clocks. Details of how they worked and lived are given including an appendix showing their accounts. Part two of the book is devoted to the tools used by the family, many of which originated in Great Britain. Very detailed descriptions and photographs of each tool are given along with their provenance. "Pièce de résistance". New York Historical Society Quarterly. "This is the story of the Dominy family, clock and furniture makers in the 18th century and 19th century and of their tools, workshops, account books, and other surviving memorabilia. In addition to being a fascinating story, this book has great reference value. The wealth of illustrations and meticulous descriptions of early tools form a useful identification manual in a field that is at best only partially documented in current literature. This work by Mr Hummel, ma highly competent scholar, is for any library" The Library Journal.. Plastic cover on jacket.
