	Arnold & Sons (John Bell & Croyden Ltd), CATALOGUE OF VETERINARY INSTRUMENTS AND APPLIANCES. Ref: 7315 Published by Arnold & Sons (John Bell & Croyden Ltd). This Catalogue (circa 1920) by the major English manufacturer of veterinary instruments contains every conceivable instrument and appliance that could be needed and used, and all are illustrated. At the time Arnold & Sons had just amalgamated with John Bell & Croyden. Both firms had now been established for 100 years. The firm held Royal Warrants from George V and also Queen Alexandria, the King of Spain and the Shah of Persia, and they were appointed manufacturers to The Army, Navy, The Honourable Council of India, Crown Agent for the Colonies, The Governments of Australia, New Zealand, Canada and Egypt and the Royal Veterinary College and His Majesty's Prisons. This takes the findings of 15 of the world's experts on medieval industries who approachthe subject from the material used (amongst others; stone, tin, lead, copper, iron, brick, glass, leather, bone and wood) and discusses the acquisition, working and sale of the finished product. The contributors describe the specialsied work that went to make the housing, clothing, tools, vessels and ornaments pf medieval people. 	A. E. Boothroyd, FASCINATING WALKING STICKS. Ref: 7332 Published by White Lion Publishers In this 1973 edition some 280 specimends of walking sticks are shown in this book and they are a fine introduction to 'Ambulistics' - the study and collecting of walking sticks. Among the those described here are such unusual ones as the one with a hearing aid battery, one with scissors for cutting grapes in a vinery and one made from a gigantic cabbage stalk. Here are also dangerous ones such as those with a flick knife and those made in form of a sword sticks. Jacket unclipped with a mylar covering. There is a neat stamp on the title page indicating that the book was in the Army Library, York. 	Prof. S. W. Boulton (ed), PRACTICAL COAL-MINING. Ref: 0201 Published by Gresham Published in 1907. 6 volumes, index, coloured frontispieces, b&w illus including fldg plates. Decorated cloth boards with picture of miner's lamp by Talwin Morris. A very good set of this comprehensive work written by the leading mining engineers and geologists of the day. One of the best sources for information on Victorian and Edwardian mining technology. Most of one of the six divisions is entirely concerned with safety lamps and rescue apparatus. This is the 1st ediiton (1871) reprinted in 1896 with a partially erased Teacher's Prize label for 1898 on the inside front cover.The Contents include: The Importance of Freehand Drawing; Linear Drawing (6 Chapters) on Mouldings, Bricks in relation to stone, Methods of Drawing a Window with Cornice, Pedestals and Semi-circular Arches, Recessed and Splayed Stone Arches; Staircases; Drawing from Solid Objects; Outline of the History of Gothic Architecture. 	John Grantham., C. E., IRON SHIP BUILDIMG. Ref: 7336 Published by Lockwood & Co. Second edition 1859. This a collection of plates on Iron Ship Building with practical examples, descriptive text and details in twenty-four lithographed plates, fourteen of them folding. These plates are addressed to ship owners and ship builders and range from; Hollow and Bar Keels, Stem and Stern Posts to three examples from the Great Eastern: (1) Longtitudinal Sections and Half Breadth Plans; (2) Midship Section, with Details; (3) Section of in Engine Room, and Paddle Boxes. 	The Grocer, GUIDE TO WINDOW DRESSING for Grocers, Provision Dealers, Off-licence Holders and Oilmen. Ref: 7222 Published by The Grocer. This is a rule book compiled in about 1912 for window dressers by the trade newspaper 'The Grocer' to improve selling in the various categories of merchandise. It has more than 120 illustrations to make its point with margarine at sixpence a pound to 26 sweet oranges for a shilling. There are some 115 examples of prize winning shop window displays to be seen in this book including 'Coffee Window', An 'All British Window', The 'Oilman's Window' and tthe 'Off-licence Window'. There are also six pages each in the front and back of the book full of contemporary advertisments. 	John E. Horsley, TOOLS OF THE MARITIME TRADES. Ref: 7334 Published by David & Charles.Ltd. First edition published by David and Charles in 1978. Practically every tool used in any of the maritime trades is described and illustrated. The trades involved are; shipwrights, sailmakers, ropemakers, riggers, blacksmiths, tinsmiths and coopers. The photographs in the book show the working atmosphere at the turn of the 19/20th century. One bookplate. 	C. H. Huish, ILLUSTRATED CATALOGUE OF VETERINARY SURGICAL INSTRUMENTS, STERILIZING APPARATUS, APPLIANCES AND SUPPLIES. Ref: 7226 Published by Huish & Co. This 1903 Catalogue of this important manufacturer of veterinary instruments was a contractor to His Majesty's Government, The Sanitary Administration of Eygpt and Makers by Special Appointment to the Melbourne Veterinary College. The Catalogue is primarily for work with horses with every conceivable kind of instrument and apparatus: anatomical models of horses; latern slides and diagrams; anatomical dissecting instruments; restraining appliances; operating table; pocket operating knives; dental instruments and cases; castrating and artificial inseminators and other gynaecological instruments plus a section on corrective horse shoes. The advertisements are very illustrative. Every other item throughout is well illustrated. viii + 2218 pp. + 10pp. of advertisements. 100s of b&w illustrations both engravings and photographs. hb. 	Keith Prowse, MUSICAL MERCHANDISE. Ref: 7345 Published by Keith Prowse. A catalogue (c.1926) of every conceivable instrument and accessory used in performing music and produced by the major manufacturer in England and the agent for the main producer in France. Every string, brass, woodwind and percussion instrument is illustrated. Plus, accessories such as Drum Majors' maces and gauntlets, various resins and strings. Also, there are harmonicas, bagpipes and many gramophones. There is also a separate 8-page list (May 1924) of concert flutes and piccolos. 	Edward H. Knight, AMERICAN MECHANICAL DICTIONARY (4 Volumes). Ref: 7335 Published by Hurd & Houghton. This is a 1979 limited reprint (600) of the 1876 edition and is subtitled "Tools, Instruments, Machines, Processes and Engineering, a History of Inventions, General Technological Vocabulary and Digest of Mechanical Appliaces in Science and the Arts. The work covers in alphabetical order every conceivable mechanical subject from 'Agricultural Implements' to 'Zincography' (engraving on zinc in the style of woodcuts). Knight had been in charge of the classification and publications at the US Patent Office. The first 3 volumes were labelled: A-FEL, FELT_PER and PER-ZYM and contained some 5000 engravings including 15 full page illustrations. The 4th volume called KNIGHT'S NEW MECHANICAL DICTIONARY, was completed after the author's death in 1883 and is labelled A-Z and contains some 3000 engravings including 56 full page illustrations. This set is No. 415 of the 600 reprinted copies and was undertaken jointly by the Early American Industries Association and the Mid-West Tool Collectors Association. In this 1950s Catalogue the manufactureres say that they have tried to make it an "Encyclopedia of the Shoe Repair Trade" rather than just a catalogue. In addition to all forms of shoe leather there is every kind of tool and accessorey needed in the shoe repair and allied leather trades. Included are colour plates of the latest quality finishing machines. This 1930s Catalogue of 'Top-All' poultry appliances produced by the Birmingham firm of Ludlow Brothers (1913) Limited contains everything needed to for poultry production from a variety of chick water fountains to various types of feeders and water troughs, mash hoppers and other food troughs. Heaters, lanterns egg testing lamps, brooder and other thermometers, poultry trussing needles, egg scale and balances. Also a variety of rabbit and hare snares. 	Thos. Parsons & Sons Ltd, A TINT BOOK OF HISTORIC COLOURS Suitable for Decorative Work. Ref: 2816 Published by Thos Parsons & Sons Ltd. This is a reference book of historical colours produced by Thos Parsons & Sons who were founded in London 1802 by George Parsons as colour and varnish makers. The book shows swatches of 136 colours under six headings; yellows and browns, blues and purples, reds and greys.The text discusses the colours in their historical contexts from, for example; Colours of Eygpt, Verdure Tapestry, Wedgwood Blue, Adam Brothers and Beauvais Tapestry. Each swatch of colour has been pasted down on to a heavy sheet of paper which has then been guarded into the book and interleaved with tissue. This is the deluxe edition of 1934 and the colours are very fresh even after 73 years. The binding and the end papers are of the same material. 35 x 185 mm. 74 pp. 30 colour plates on heavy paper. They were located in Newton, North Wales and operated a mail order system and had there own Post Office and their own railway carriages to transport their clothes. Appointed by the Englsih Royal Family, the Empress' of Russia and Germany and the Queen of Italy. Every conceivable kind of outwear and underwear for women is portrayed in this catalogue as well as children's and men's clothing. Fully illustrated throughout.
